本書は大衆メディアに描かれた原子力をめぐる言説を比較研究的かつ越境史的観点から分析した専門書である。編者であるディック・ファン・レンテ（エラスム ス・ロッテルダム大学教授）によると、これまでの大衆文化における原子力イメージの研究の多くは、一国内における原子力イメージの分析にとどまり、その越 境的側面にはあまり注目してこなかった。従来の大衆メディアにおける原子力イメージの研究に、比較研究的かつ越境史的アプローチを加えることを通して、各 国に共通する原子力をめぐる言説、または特定の国にのみに当てはまる言説を体系的に明らかにすることが本書の目的である。

本書は8か国（旧ソビエト連邦・米国・東西ドイツ・英国・オランダ・日本・インド）の代表的な写真週刊誌を主な分析対象としつつ、新聞、テレビ番 組、漫画などにおける原子力イメージも適宜参考にしながら、1945年から1965年に至るまでの大衆文化における原子力をめぐる言説を分析している。本 書の構成は以下の通り。

本書に掲載された論文のうち、311を理解するうえでとくに参考になるものとして第7章の内海博文（追手門学院大学）による論文が挙げられる。内海 は日本の写真週刊誌『アサヒグラフ』における原子力のイメージを文化的・社会的・歴史的文脈に位置付けながら分析し、『アサヒグラフ』が占領期において連 合国最高司令官総司令部（GHQ）に設置された民間情報教育局や米紙「ニューヨーク・タイムズ」、さらには米大手通信社AP通信から記事の提供を受けてい たこと、また占領期が終わったのちも英国大使館から写真の提供を受けていたと指摘する。加えて、内海は『アサヒグラフ』に描かれた原子力のイメージを、日 本人の原子力観をコントロールするためのイメージとしてのみ理解するのではなく、当時の日本人の原子力に対する世論の反映としても理解すべきだと主張して いる。

本書は専門家に向けて書かれているものの、各国の歴史的背景、各写真週刊誌の編集方針、各写真週刊誌の読者層など各章で丁寧に説明されている。大学生以上のテキストとしてのぞましい。
